seiu convention 2008

SEIU member delegates closed our 2008 Convention with the election of 23 Vice Presidents and 37 Executive Board members, including 20 percent of them new members, to lead the union for its 2008-2012 term.

Nine members of the board are rank-and-file SEIU members.

The 2008-2012 SEIU International Executive Board is one of the most racially and ethnically diverse bodies elected in the history of the labor movement, and many of its members came from the rank-and-file. It includes representation from across SEIU's three divisions and all parts of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

SEIU Healthcare Leaders Urge UHW Members to Support Plan to Achieve Healthcare Justice for All

With three weeks until SEIU members and leaders gather for the SEIU International Convention, leaders of SEIU healthcare locals across the U.S. and Canada have united in support of a new SEIU plan to win quality healthcare for all and build greater strength for healthcare workers throughout North America. Today 34 SEIU Healthcare leaders released a letter to UHW-W members—whose local union has not yet endorsed the plan—urging them to join nearly 800,000 other healthcare workers in supporting the platform.

Ohio Nurses Condemn California Nurses Association’s Union-Busting Scare Tactics and Propaganda

Nearly 8,000 nurses and other healthcare workers in Ohio recently saw their dreams of forming a union derailed after the California Nurses Association (CNA) flooded the state with hostile organizers and bombarded workers with wildly false and misleading leaflets and phone calls urging them to vote against the union.

In response to the California Nurses Association’s (CNA) disgraceful and deceitful tactics, nurses impacted by the delay of the elections published an open letter to CNA Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro expressing their outrage and disappointment.

The nurses write, “You have brought harm to thousands of workers and families in Ohio, and you should be ashamed of what you have done.”

Currently, the Patient Right to Know Act has been filed as SB 1186 in the Florida Senate by Sen. Nan Rich and as HB 851 by Rep. Ron Brise in the House. The bill would require hospitals to report to the Agency for Health Care Administration the average number of RN, LPN and CNA staff per patient in each unit, including agency use, for access by the public.

Washington, DC—Nurses, childcare workers, janitors and other service workers endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president today, calling him the candidate with the best vision, best plan and best strategy to lead the country to a new American Dream.

Members of the Service Employees International Union endorsed Obama to achieve economic justice, quality, affordable healthcare for every American, the freedom for workers to unite in unions, and an end to the Iraq war.

Pauline Beck, a home health care worker in Oakland, CA, said, “Barack is the right candidate for workers.  He will change our country.” Senator Obama spent a day with Beck last August, helping her care for an elderly patient and spending time with Beck’s family.

Takeover of Major Nursing Home Chain Could Worsen Care for Thousands of Elderly Florida Residents

In an effort to improve nursing home care in Florida, the state’s largest healthcare workers union today launched a new campaign calling on global buyout giant the Carlyle Group to put care above CEO profits in the $6.3 billion takeover of nursing home chain HCR Manor Care. There is growing concern that the buyout may come at a high cost to seniors, taxpayers, and workers. Manor Care, the nation’s largest nursing home provider, runs 29 homes in Florida.

SEIU Healthcare Florida’s campaign joins campaigns being launched today by SEIU in more than half a dozen states where Manor Care operates.
